Narrowboat Toilet Systems Compared: Pump-Out, Cassette or Composting?

Nobody talks about narrowboat toilets before they buy a boat. They talk about kitchens, layouts, and paint colours. Then they move aboard and realise the toilet is something they will think about every single day.

If you are planning full-time or extended liveaboard life, your toilet system is one of the most important spec decisions you will make. The wrong choice creates daily inconvenience, unexpected costs, and in some cases, forces expensive changes mid-ownership. This guide covers every system available in 2026, what each one actually costs to run, and which works best depending on how you plan to use your boat.

The Three Main Narrowboat Toilet Systems

There are three systems fitted to narrowboats in the UK: pump-out, cassette, and composting. Each works differently, costs differently, and suits a different style of boating. There is no single best option. The right answer depends on whether you cruise continuously, moor in a marina, or plan a mix of both.

Pump-Out Toilets

A pump-out toilet works like a scaled-down version of a domestic flush toilet. Waste drains into a holding tank, usually between 200 and 600 litres, built into the hull of the boat. When the tank is full, you cruise or travel to a pump-out station where a machine empties the tank through a deck fitting.

The experience is the closest to a domestic toilet of any system on a narrowboat. You flush, nothing needs removing, and there is no visible waste management involved in your day-to-day life.

What it costs to run

Pump-out fees in 2026 run from around £15 to £25 per empty, depending on the facility. A couple living aboard full-time will typically need a pump-out every two to four weeks, depending on tank size. Budget roughly £300 to £500 per year for pump-out fees alone.

The challenge is access. Pump-out stations are not everywhere. On some popular cruising routes they are plentiful. On quieter waterways, stretches of canal, or during winter when some facilities close, you can find yourself hunting for one. If you are continuous cruising and your tank fills unexpectedly, this can become genuinely stressful.

What to ask your builder

Tank size matters enormously. A 300-litre tank and a 600-litre tank are very different propositions for a liveaboard couple. Ask your builder what tank capacity they fit as standard, and whether a larger tank is possible given your hull design. Larger tanks are worth specifying at the build stage because retrofitting them later is expensive and disruptive.

Also ask where the pump-out point is positioned on the deck. Some installations make this awkward; a well-positioned fitting makes the job far easier.

Best suited for: Couples who cruise regularly on well-served waterways, or marina-based boaters with easy pump-out access on site.

Cassette Toilets

A cassette toilet uses a removable waste cartridge, typically holding 15 to 19 litres, fitted beneath the toilet unit. When the cassette is full, you remove it through a hatch in the hull side or from beneath the toilet, carry it to an Elsan disposal point, empty it, clean it, and replace it.

The system is self-contained and independent of any external pump-out infrastructure. You are never stuck waiting for a pump-out station because disposal points are far more common across the waterway network.

What it costs to run

There is no per-empty fee. Disposal is free at Elsan points, which are maintained by the Canal and River Trust at regular intervals along most navigable waterways. The ongoing cost is chemical fluid, which you add to the cassette to control odour and break down waste. A litre of chemical fluid costs around £5 to £8 and treats several empties. Annual chemical costs for a liveaboard couple are typically £80 to £150.

The honest trade-off

The cassette is a physical job. You carry a full 15 to 19 litre cassette from the boat to the disposal point and empty it yourself. For some people this is no problem. For others, especially those with mobility concerns or who find lifting difficult, it becomes a real consideration. A full cassette weighs roughly 15 to 19 kilograms.

For full-time liveaboards, a cassette fills quickly, often within three to five days for a couple. That means this job is regular. It is not unpleasant if you approach it practically, but it is a fact of daily boat life that deserves honest consideration before you commit.

Best suited for: Continuous cruisers, those on quieter waterways where pump-out access is limited, and boaters who want total independence from paid facilities.

Composting Toilets

A composting toilet separates liquid and solid waste. Liquid drains to a separate container and can be disposed of on land away from waterways. Solid waste drops into a composting chamber where it is broken down over time by a bulking agent, usually coir or wood shavings.

The system uses no water for flushing, requires no pump-out, and produces no chemical waste. For the right type of boater, it is genuinely excellent.

What it costs to run

Initial purchase cost for a quality composting unit is between £800 and £1,500. Ongoing costs are minimal: bulking agent at roughly £20 to £40 per year, and occasional bag disposal for the composted solids. There are no pump-out fees and no chemical purchases.

The honest trade-off

Composting toilets require more active management than the other two systems. The liquid container needs emptying frequently, sometimes every day or two for a couple. The solid composting chamber needs emptying every few weeks to months depending on usage and unit size. The process is odourless when managed correctly, but "managed correctly" does require attention.

Some people take to composting toilets immediately and never look back. Others find the hands-on management does not suit liveaboard life. We recommend speaking to boaters who use them before specifying one on a new build, not because they are a bad system, but because your honest reaction to the practical reality matters more than the theory.

Best suited for: Eco-conscious boaters, those cruising remote waterways, and those who prefer minimal reliance on canal infrastructure.

Can You Have a Backup System?

Yes, and many full-time liveaboards do. A common combination is a pump-out tank as the primary toilet with a cassette porta-potti kept on board for emergencies, particularly for times when the pump-out tank is full and no pump-out is accessible nearby. This approach costs more at the build stage but provides genuine peace of mind.

What About the Boat Safety Certificate and Waste Systems?

Any narrowboat operating on UK waterways must hold a valid safety document. For new builds, a Declaration of Conformity covers the boat for the first four years. After that, a Boat Safety Certificate (BSC) is required, renewed every four years. At JD Narrowboats, we also commission a Boat Safety check from day one as a belt-and-braces measure. It provides an independent set of eyes over the work and costs around £300.

Your toilet and waste system must comply with BSS standards. Specifically, no untreated sewage can be discharged into waterways. All three systems described in this guide comply with BSS requirements when correctly installed.

Pump-out is the most domestic experience and suits marina-based or well-cruised routes. Cassette gives you the most independence but requires regular physical effort.
