If you're here, you're probably somewhere in the middle of a big decision.

Maybe you've been researching for months. Maybe you've watched the YouTube videos, read the forums, spent evenings on narrowboat groups trying to piece together what a sailaway actually involves - and who you can trust to build one.

And the more you research, the more questions appear.

Is sailaway the right choice for us, or will we end up with more than we bargained for?

How do we know the builder is actually doing the work themselves - and not handing it off to someone else?

What if we get this wrong? This isn't a small decision. This is a six-figure, once-in-a-lifetime commitment.

You're not being dramatic. You're being thorough. And that's exactly the right approach.

Because the people who end up with a narrowboat they love - one that's warm in winter, reliable on the cut, and built the way they actually wanted it - are the ones who asked the hard questions before they committed.

You're asking them. Good.

What if I choose the wrong builder, spend £80,000 on a sailaway shell, and end up with something I have to spend another £30,000 fixing - or worse, compromising on - because the steel wasn't right, the engine wasn't right, or corners were cut I'll never even see?

That fear is legitimate. It happens. There are horror stories - boats delivered with unreliable systems, subcontracted work that nobody properly inspected, builders who were helpful until the deposit was paid and distant afterwards.

This page exists because we want you to know that is not how JD Narrowboats works. And we want to prove it to you - not just say it.

Imagine the moment you step aboard for the first time.

The steel is solid. The engine turns over first time. The fit-out shell is clean, well-insulated, exactly to the spec you agreed - ready for you to make it yours.

No nasty surprises. No phone calls that go unanswered. No wondering whether the work was actually done in-house or farmed out to someone you never met.

Just a boat built right, by a team that treated your build as if it were their own.

Imagine knowing that when winter comes - when the temperature drops and the canal freezes - your boat was insulated properly from the start. That the heating system was specified correctly. That the hull thickness is exactly what was agreed.

Imagine being proud of what you're standing on. Showing it to other boaters. Hearing them say it's the nicest boat they've seen on the cut.

That is what a JD sailaway build delivers. Not hope. Not a brochure promise. Two hundred customers have said it - in their own words.

How a JD Sailaway Build Actually Works

Six steps. One team. Complete transparency from first conversation to the moment you cruise away.

Step 1 - The Free Consultation

A relaxed conversation - not a sales meeting. We ask about how you want to use the boat, what matters most to you, and whether sailaway genuinely makes sense for your situation. If it doesn't, we'll tell you. No agenda.

Step 2 - Design & Specification

Together we build the spec for your sailaway shell — length, steel gauge, engine choice, insulation spec, electrical shell, roof, windows, doors. Every decision is yours, guided by our experience. Nothing is templated. Nothing is assumed.

Clear pricing. Fixed costs. Payment tied to build milestones - you pay as the work is completed, not upfront. No surprises. No additional costs appearing from nowhere.

Step 3 - Agreement & Milestone Payments

Step 4 - The Build

Your boat is built entirely in our Derbyshire workshop by our own team. No subcontractors. No outsourcing. You receive regular photo and video updates throughout. You are welcome to visit at any stage - and we encourage it.

Step 5 - Quality Inspection

Before your boat leaves our workshop, every system is tested and inspected by the same team that built it. The hull is blacked. The Boat Safety certificate is obtained. Nothing leaves until it's right.

Step 6 - Handover

We go through every system with you in person - how it works, how to maintain it, what to check. You leave feeling confident, not just excited. And our number stays in your phone long after delivery day.

Why customers who do their homework choose JD Narrowboats

Not a new business, not learning on your boat. Two decades of builds, thousands of decisions refined, a team that has seen - and solved - every challenge the build process produces.

20+ years building bespoke narrowboats

This is not a marketing line. It is a structural commitment. Every weld, every system, every finish is done by our team, in our workshop, in Derbyshire. We do not outsource. That means one point of accountability - us - for everything on your boat.

All work done in our own workshop

Each one bespoke. Each one designed around the customer who commissioned it. That number represents 200+ conversations where we listened first, and built second.

200+ completed builds

There is no faceless company behind JD Narrowboats. The same family that started this business is still building your boat. That matters when it comes to accountability, pride, and the kind of care that does not appear on a spec sheet.

Family-run - three generations

18-month warranty on every build

Not six months. Not twelve. Eighteen - because we are confident in the work and we stand behind it completely.

Visits always welcomed

Come and see the workshop. See a boat at various stages of construction. Meet the team. Ask every question you have. A builder with nothing to hide has nothing to hide. We will show you everything.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Not always. It depends on your budget, your skills, your timeline, and how you want to spend the next phase of the project. We will tell you honestly if full fit-out makes more sense for your situation. Our consultation is advice, not a sales pitch.

  • Come and visit. Seriously - visit the workshop, watch the work being done, meet the people doing it. We encourage every customer to come and see. That is not something a builder who outsources can offer.

  • This is why the consultation matters. We have guided hundreds of customers through this exact decision. We know the questions to ask, the factors that tip it either way, and the things people wish they had considered before committing. By the end of our conversation, you will know which option is right for you.

  • Everything we build. If something we constructed or specified has a problem within eighteen months of delivery, we fix it. No small print. No blame-shifting. One builder, one warranty, one point of contact.

  • Always. We send regular photo and video updates, and you are welcome on-site at any point. Seeing your boat at various stages of construction is one of the things customers tell us they valued most about the process.

  • CRT licence approximately £1,200–£1,400 per year. Insurance approximately £300–£600. Diesel varies by use. Mooring if you choose one. We cover all of this honestly in our free guide — no sugar-coating.

Book a Free, No-Pressure Consultation

This is not a sales call.

There is no presentation, no pitch, no commitment required. Just a conversation - what you are imagining, what questions you have, what your situation looks like. We will tell you honestly whether sailaway makes sense for you and what the process would look like if you decided to go ahead.
